JBridge: About Me

JBridge Home >> My Details Last updated: Monday 22nd September 2003

I started my working life as a teacher, and have never lost my enthusiasm for putting across ideas to others.

My IT career began in 1988, since which time I have:
  • Written a lot of programs in various languages and styles.
  • Led teams of programmers on many sorts of projects.
  • Crossed the divide from procedural languages and methods to object oriented techniques, and helped others do the same.
  • Worked a lot with the much maligned but magnificent iSeries (AS/400) computer from IBM - including writing and implementing WebSphere Application Server and Java-based web applications on the platform.
  • Worked a great deal with large databases (both inside and outside of data warehouses).
As well as offering my own courses, I currently work as a freelance Java/WebSphere trainer for IBM.

I have written articles on Java-related subjects for a couple of technology journals (ePro Magazine and iSeries News). Here is a link to my ePro Magazine article - on the subject of "PTDV", a tool for performance-tuning an iSeries Java application.

I am a Sun Certified Java Programmer and Sun Certified Web Component Developer. Follow this link to that part of Sun's web site which explains the certification program.

I recently gave a talk at the Object Technology 2003 conference, on the subject of the Expresso framework - for rapid development of web-based Java database applications. You can find the abstract of the talk through this link. View or download the talk from this page (following soon).

A more formal CV can be found here.

In my spare time, I aspire to be a better musician. I have played classical piano all my life and most enjoy accompanying singers and instrumentalists. I recently took up the viola as a route to playing in orchestras.
